#RoyalWedding Meghan Markle’s Folks Don’t Make Them Family

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are getting married this weekend in case you hadn’t heard. If there’s actually a show of hands out there, Meghan’s family members have been more than willing to run and tell dat.

My invitation to the royal wedding might’ve gotten lost in the mail but Meghan’s kinfolk were intentionally left out of the upcoming festivities at Windsor Castle. Thomas Sr., Samantha and Thomas Jr. will not be in the chapel taking selfies with Queen Elizabeth. Her father staged paparazzi shots, had a heart attack and has spent the past few days using TMZ as his press secretary.  Thomas Jr. blasted Meghan in open letter, demanding Prince Harry not marry his sister and Samantha has told anyone who will listen how Meghan is the reason why the sun doesn’t shine. It’s been one plot twist after another with these folks.

All the while, Doria Ragland has been minding her own business and eating her food. The mother of the bride has shown the most respect, deference and class for her daughter’s happiness than those other troublemakers combined but initially bore the brunt of shaming the monarchy. The British press reduced Dora to a caricature because she wears her hair in a natural style and lived in Compton. An accomplished woman like Meghan is an actress and philanthropist but portrayed as a social climber deemed not good enough for Prince Harry. As though Princess Diana didn’t spill all the tea about the royals, Harry’s problematic past which includes his Nazi displays and that Prince Charles wasn’t a divorced man himself when he wed for the second time. The firm is lucky to have these two Queens joining them for tea and scones at the dinner table.

The level of scathing racism Meghan and Dora have endured to get to this point has been on display; that both have shown more grace than required is a testament to their characters and possibly just a sign they’re used to that side of the family acting like damn fools. I’ve been there. You can give so much of yourself to another because you share blood but the venom they feel for you courses through their veins; just waiting for the moment to spit it right back in your face. There comes a point when you just can’t turn the other cheek.

It’s not easy cutting off family members but it has to be done for your own well being. I was recently told by a relative that I was only a “title” after I extended myself. Lesson learned. I have no regrets removing this person from my life because there’s more to being family than DNA.  It’s a biological fact but doesn’t lend itself to that person being any closer to you than a stranger on the street. Be very wary of foes hiding in plain sight as family.

None of us get to pick our family members. It’s the draw of the universe but we can choose we share our cherished moments and life with. I don’t blame Meghan one bit for keeping hers away on what should be a special day.  They’ve already tried to sabotage it. While all the drama is giving the rest of us in the peanut gallery something to talk about, no more words need to be said to those who are actively trying to steal your joy. You’ve got your mom and sometimes, that’s all you need.

Meghan, enjoy your day and Prince. Your story deserves its happily ever after and I’ll be up at 5 a.m. , crust in my eyes and a yawn slipping through my mouth, wishing you well.
