      Rubies.

The stone is what comes to mind when I think of Mishael Morgan, Emmy nominated portrayer of Hilary Curtis on The Young and the Restless. She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare to her.

Morgan is arguably one of the crown jewels of Y&R. Value her as such. Run Mishael her money may not exactly be scripture but that is the energy for here and now.

TV Source reported Wednesday that Morgan and the CBS daytime serial drama were in the middle of contract negotiations that weren’t going well. Read between the lines and it’s about money and Morgan being properly compensated for her work.  After nearly five years on the show in a stint that has included a Daytime Emmy nomination, appearances on The Price Is Right and part of the supercouple known as Hevon, she’s more than earned her praise and things. Alas, it doesn’t seem like the execs are quite convinced because rumor has it that Hilary may be killed off in a car crash if both sides can’t come to a deal.

Daytime Confidential later confirmed that Morgan is set to depart.

Soap Twitter wasn’t having it. Not on their watch.

We are devastated to say the least. We have often been tasked with rallying behind Mishael and we will do so again. Please email the show at yrbb@tvc.cbs.com & CBS Feedback https://t.co/rh9a49Ijsf and call CBS at 323.575.2345 and let them know what Mishael means to us! #YR #Hevon https://t.co/31U8B2Emdz

@AngelicaMcD @malyoung @SteveKentSony I've said multiple times that my love for Hilary is 1000% rooted in the fact that Mishael Morgan is a phenomenal actress and makes me care. I will follow her wherever she goes. But I hope Sony comes to their senses. Shes a STAR!

      — The Heather Locklear of the #TVSPodcast (@WrecklessLove) June 6, 2018

Hilary is the most popular black character on #YR. And before the #Lane fans hop in my mentions, Lily is written as a white girl. Let’s keep it real.

My day is freakin ruined. I hope the rumors arent true and y'all do right by Mishael Morgan. Give her a contract deserving of popular, Emmy-nominated actress and don't make the TERRIBLE mistake of letting her walk. @SteveKentSony @AngelicaMcD @YandR_CBS @CBSDaytime #YR

#YR Run Mishael Morgan her money!!!!!!

      — rodrigo santana (@rodrigo1993) June 6, 2018

These rumors about @MishaelMorgan1 better be just that…rumors. We ALL want #Hevon Romance matters. Her chemistry with @BrytonEjames is everything #YR

      — Andrea25 (@aurbinato) June 6, 2018

Years of being a soap opera fan has made it crystal clear just how much others look down upon us all. It’s as if we’re somehow children who don’t realize that this is fiction. The question of why do you care so much is rarely asked of sports fans. They spend their income tax and rent money on tickets and wildly celebrate in the streets after a win. We simply watch from our homes and tweet our opinions but we’re often stigmatized as people who have no lives and are looking for any form of escapism. Watch the news in 2018 or just scroll social media and show me someone who isn’t.

We all need a distraction and the oldest medium provides a way for us to be entertained with our stories for a few hours out of the day and if you’re an actor or actress fortunate enough to build a following, you are crowned. To many of us, Morgan sits upon a very cherished throne.

We want Morgan and Hilary to remain a daily part of our lives because they’re lightning in a bottle. If both were to chuck deuces, it would no doubt be Hollywood’s gain. Her sheer talent and prime age make it more than possible that she’d follow in the footsteps of Justin Hartley and become the next big thing. Yet, from her recent interviews, she’s expressed being happy with her job and open to spending more time in Genoa City.

Victoria Rowell, another gem who breathed so much life into Drucilla Winters, also wanted to stay put when she left the show in 2007 amid contract and backstage drama. She told us many years ago that people of color in daytime weren’t being paid what they were worth. In fact, she told me herself when I interviewed her years ago. Certain folks don’t like Victoria because they think she’s too in your face, problematic and doesn’t abide by respectability politics. Her advocacy for more Black writers, producers and executives isn’t done the right way to detractors. Since around that time, Rowell has been tagged as crazy. But did she lie? Did Mo’Nique when she accused Netflix of low balling her? Did Viola Davis when she demanded to be paid like Meryl Streep if you’re going to keep calling her the Black version? No lies have been told, regardless of what you may think of the messenger. The truth doesn’t change. Women, especially Black women, are underpaid.

For many, the specter of Victoria and Dru still looms. She’s vindicated every time fans have to lobby for Black characters to be written with substance, dimension and not just seen once a week. Hilary Curtis came along and it felt as though a shift were taking place. She struck a chord with viewers, particularly Black women, in the way that channeled back to Dru.

Hilary is full on messy boots at her worst, a woman in love with Devon, rival to Lily and surrogate mother to Shauna. It’s a hat trick of complexities that Morgan pulls off with finesse. She’ll smile in one scene, curl lips in anger in another, remind us that she’s a grown woman still carrying scars from the past and put on her best Wendy Williams grin if it means she can spite Lily. Hilary at her best is a fleshed out character with nuance, a type of grace that another actress may not have amplified because it hasn’t always been written in the script. Morgan had to imbue Hilary with her humanity when the writers didn’t and that hasn’t gone unnoticed. The angry Black woman is such a worn trope and it is very much appreciated when our full humanity is represented.

Morgan’s absence will be felt. Hiring another Black actress in a few months won’t change that either since they are not interchangeable. You can’t just swap in one for another and pay her even less if it means a box is checked. The dynamic won’t be the same and contrary to popular belief, Black viewers don’t necessarily love all Black faces just because. I don’t like Neil and he was blessed by Dru but I’m sure he’s somebody’s favorite. Just like Lily has her die hards.  Devon is also wildly popular. All of them aren’t for everyone and that’s the beauty of it all. They all have their unique strengths. Each of these characters have their supporters and at this time, I hope those that love Hilary will be heard.

May the Lord wrap himself around the mentions of the powers that be if they’re not.

    • Kate Spade Suicide Another Reminder of Never Really Knowing Another’s Burden

You never know what someone is going through. Not until it’s too late at times.

Kate Spade is another reminder of all that shimmers isn’t gold. The iconic fashion designer was found dead of an apparent suicide on Tuesday. She was only 55 and  a powerhouse with 150 stores nationwide and 175 internationally with millions in her bank account and none of that could fill the void in her. My heart goes out to her family and loved ones.

Suicide is an act that I’d never take but I’ve got no judgment. None at all. That kind of attitude goes against what I was raised to believe which is that taking your own life is the ultimate sin. In the church, you’ve got to give it God and tell the pastor what’s wrong. Depression is routinely treated as a bad mood or demonic spirit that the prayer warriors can fix and licensed counselors aren’t really needed. This frame of reference is not an indictment.  A lot of people genuinely do believe that if you just read the Bible enough and leave it all at the altar, your breakthrough will come. I’m waiting on mine.

I’m just going to be honest. I’m not happy. I’m not suffering from depression or suicidal but I’m just not happy.  There’s a gulf of space between living your best life, going through the motions and wanting to end it all. I’m in the middle as I suspect most are. I am stuck in place where I just wake up, shower, put one foot in front of the other and watch as the days blend into one another. There are many frustrations weighing on me and I’ve fallen to my knees in prayer because that’s what I’ve been taught to do. At times, it seems like a chore born out of guilt. I’ve lost count over how many times I’ve been told that I’m just not praying hard enough and that God would’ve heard me by now if I were really trying. Even cutting my hair seemed to have some Satanic implication if you let some people tell it. I guess it’s the same devil that possessed me when I was 19 because I liked a guy who was 27. I’ve been laughed at for seeking the help of professionals because what can they do that God can’t? That if he brought you to it, he’ll bring you through it. That you’re being tested and he only uses the strong.

Even DMX thinks so. I went to my first concert in January and pastor X gave a few words of wisdom. In his own way of course.

I share all this not to mock my faith but to let it be known that there is no shame. You can love God and still step outside the church for help. None of us really has all our shit together. I don’t.. My struggle isn’t the same or severe as the next person but we’re all a bunch of Effie’s. We’ve all got pain.

My friend, LaJaneé Scott (IG @_lajanee_) has one of the most larger than life personalities that I know and she’s been open about her experiences. Her recent Facebook post is raw, to the point and worth sharing.

Depression is so real & is completely different from sadness.

Depression is a state of mind, dark place, a lost place. Sadness is just a damn feeling.

Depression is literally like walking around w/a weight on your body that makes you weep in silence. No matter who calls, you can’t shake it.

You can’t fuck it away, drink it away, spend it away, or run it away. It’s like a gnat that won’t go away.

With sadness, one person calls & you’re instantly not sad anymore.

I talk about depression & anxiety a lot (y’all know this). People really gotta stop acting like folks can just snap out of it or have enough money to not suffer from shit.

Therapy is good. Therapy is great & it saved my damn life.

Y’all can keep on playing w/shit & act like you gon’ ‘pray everything away, if you want to.

Better take yo depressed ass to a therapist after you pray. Suicide attempts are real.

Stop discounting people & telling them to talk to God. They also need to talk to a damn therapist & possibly need medication.

Kate Spade was depressed & used her own scarf to hang herself. I’m sure somebody told her to not worry about it (her issue).

It feels like I’ve already put too much out there but we’re all holding something back from view. Ego and pride won’t let us share what’s stealing our joy. It’s just easier to keep up with the Jones’ of Facebook; sharing smiling pictures and moments in time. I’ve done it and have become quite at an expert at it. I won’t use Facebook as my own personal diary but I will upload photos that often seem like I haven’t got a care in the world when I know the truth; there’s nothing behind my eyes. I’m just there in body.

I’ve been carrying a lot of pain and the load is getting easier. There used to be a time I never wanted anyone to know that I was a victim of sexual abuse. I couldn’t even speak the words. I went to therapy for a year and talked about the weather or my grades. On the very last session, I wrote a note to my counselor about what happened to me as a child. Restoring myself emotionally, mentally and spiritually has not been an easy process but I’m fortunate to have people that care and are prating for me. I don’t take it for granted at all but also know that it takes more than that.

Check in on your strong friends; the ones who always seem to bear the burdens of everyone else and are always there. They just might be tapping into their reserves for that strength. Take the time to really ask and mean it when you wonder how someone is doing. I’ve had folks tell me that I’m far too nice. Some don’t deserve it but an act of kindness can go a mighty long way for someone who may need it. If I’m quiet, it’s not because I have nothing to say. I’ve got so much to say but it’s hard to say the words and I know I’m not alone in that feeling.

If you are having suicidal thoughts and need someone to talk to, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline number at 1-800-273-8255 and the Crisis Text Line is 741741.

    • What in the name of Stephanie Forrester has happened to #BoldandBeautiful?

      Make it make sense.

In the realm of daytime soap operas, not much makes sense. Granted, that also applies to real life these days but reel should have no reason to be so devoid of logic when it’s intentionally scripted. For The Bold and the Beautiful, the greater offense is not living up to its name. It’s no longer bold but rather boring.

As I write this, Steffy is currently delivering her baby. Myself and other viewers  may as well be in labor too, enduring the Liam Spencer hour. Every show, script, character and story revolves around him. The thought of it makes me want to scream, have someone take my hand and wipe the beads of sweat from around my forehead. Steffy will be holding baby Kelly in her arms next week but what about this Stephanie? I shouldn’t have to be in pain watching one of my favorite shows circle the drain because Brad Bell and creative only want to xerox dialogue.

The truth may hurt for those at CBS reading this but this is a safe place.

Let’s talk through this. If I didn’t care and know Bold could do better, I’d just wait for CBS to put the serial in the endangered species listing. I don’t want to speak of Brooke Logan in the past tense. I want to still be able to trash my favorite love to hate slut from the valley but we’ve got to be honest about where the show is now.

William J. Bell and Lee Phillp Bell’s creation premiered in 1987. Naturally, it will show its age but the cast includes Heather Tom, Don Diamont, Scott Clifton, Rena Sofer, Karla Mosley,  Jacqueline MacInnes Wood and original cast members Katherine Kelly Lang and John McCook who anchor this ensemble about fashion and drama. So many heavy hitters and the material just isn’t there but yet every few months, a big name is added. Ingo Rademacher was hired as a recast Thorne and I still don’t know why. Yes, the Forrester spare has spent many years in the basement but surely not enough time to develop an Australian accent. Kimberlin Brown’s bungled return to her old stomping grounds is such a sin. Sheila Carter has been reduced to serving coffee!

      Dek6nzuU8AITjdo

      Credit: Twitter

Hunter Tylo made her long awaited return as Taylor Hayes Forrester and instead of letting Sheila know she’s got a bullet for her too, it’s all about Liam. Taylor should’ve been the first to tell Steffy that no man is worth the stress and sanity but old habits die hard. She’s still competing with Brooke, but this time over whose daughter gets to be the leader of Liam’s harem.

For a show that is set against the backdrop of California and the shenanigans in fashion, it’s so regressive. It may as well be the era of the 1950’s where people are stigmatized for having kids out of wedlock and just freely enjoying sex without condemnation. The traditional family structure is important but it’s not the only one that deserves recognition and women will not herd cats if there’s not a man around. Steffy’s character has become such a cliché, obsessing over a man who proposed to another the second he divorced her. She is named after Stephanie Forrester dammit! Steffy should’ve put his shit in a box to the left because that is who she is, not defined on anyone else’s terms but her own.

Instead, Steffy cries in every episode over Liam and behaves like a victim of her consequences. She and her father in law had sex. Regrettable but not rape. It also doesn’t make her the town punching bag and Brooke’s virtue signaling is so out of character. She’s been married to all the men in the family and should be jealous and proud that a new generation has learned from her. Even when Brooke wasn’t a vixen stealing any man she so desired, she was a force to be reckoned with as a chemist and businesswoman.

Hope should be Brooke’s prized pupil. The lovechild of Brooke and Deacon showed no growth after living in Europe. She just had to have Liam back. Let that hurt go. There’s nothing wrong with being single or just living up to her heritage. Hope could’ve assumed the mantle of “slut”, sleeping with whomever she chooses because she can. Or she could be invested in her career. Instead, she came to town humming George Harrison’s “Got My Mind Set On You”. It’s a catchy classic but “None of Your Business” by Salt N Pepa knocks too.

Sadly, we can’t have nice things. Everyone’s got to be married on this show and marching down the aisle. The cast can do so much more than be gloried extras in a David Bridal infomercial. The endless weddings on this show have to be sponsored.

Bold is only a half hour show and there’s but so much time to go around. Just make it count. Amber and Rick’s romance with some Usher thrown in there took place during the Brooke/Ridge/Taylor heyday. Macy and Throne’s relationship, Sally Spectra scheming to take down Forrester and Maya’s transgender reveal were stories that got rotation without sacrificing the ensemble.

Stephanie Forrester, portrayed by powerhouse Susan Flannery, certainly polarized the canvas during her reign. She used to be the standard, driver of stories and also supported. The writers knew how to weave her larger than life presence without bludgeoning the audience. Stephanie infuriated, could read with the life force of Whitney Houston’s best shade moments and crossed the line many times. So many times but we were ride or die for her. I loved that woman. I still do. So much strength infused her bones and it was every scene. Susan always clocked in for work. That’s not an opinion either. She’s got those four Emmys on her mantle as proof.

There’s such a void that’s been left since Stephanie’s character was killed off in November 2012 due to Flannery retiring. For me, it’ll never be filled but Bold still doesn’t have to feel so empty.

The audacity of hope. It’s not just the name of former President Barack Obama’s best-selling memoir but my vibe when it comes to Hilary Curtis and Devon Hamilton. When their powers combine, Hevon is rising.

Earth, fire, wind, water and heart. All of these have been summoned lately in the past month as my favorite couple on daytime has got me in my feelings. Mishael Morgan and Bryton James have given tour de force performances on The Young and the Restless as their characters have inched closer to reconciliation. My blood pressure couldn’t take them being apart and now my heart flutters. These two.

      Because one kiss wasn't enough 😩😍 #YR #Hevon pic.twitter.com/SSmKcKR9r5

      — The Hamiltons 👑 (@Hevonfans) May 30, 2018

I’m a romantic (and crime buff) at heart . I have no shame in admitting that I woke at 4 a.m. to watch the recent wedding of Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan.  On a regulr day and for the past five years, Hevon has had me wrapped around their fingers even when I wanted to give Y&R the bird. Lately, their relationship has been out of a fairy tale with the renewed care Executive producer/Head Writer Mal Young has shown to their development.

Hilary and Devon are sharing kisses, smiles, massages, holding hands, dancing cheek to cheek and those simple glances that convey more than words. Speaking of which, the dialogue has shifted from Devon and Hilary hurling insults at one another to having real conversations. They’re getting to know each other again, admitting past mistakes and forging a new path. He even crowned her his Queen.

Gone are the days of Devon tearing into Hilary because she tripped Mariah or threatening to haul her into court because she wanted to quit The Hilary Hour. Or throwing Simone in her face as though she were anything but a rebound. He’s lucky he wasn’t sued for sexual harassment but I digress. Devon was acting like a fool but so was Hilary. Given Hilary’s scheme to get pregnant with his baby, I expected another round of Devon going all Pusha T on her when he showed up at the hospital. Color me shocked when she admitted the truth of her false positive to the pregnancy test and he comforted her. He still wanted his love to carry his child. Growth, the power of love and a new script prevailed.

For the Bianca’s and Richard’s out there, I’m just gonna let Whitney take it from here.

Hevon isn’t for you. Never has been. Never will be. They are for the fans of this couple who saw the fire between them long before the show thought there might be a spark. We have been watching from the mountains. Well, more like the comfort of our homes and apps for this wave of optimism and story worthy of their dynamic.

Hilary is actually pregnant this time?! Omg when is the baby shower?! I gotta get ready! #YR #Hevon pic.twitter.com/7yEngwc7N9

I am beyond ready….about time this young black love wins something! These two passionate, caring, fierce, forgiving and protective people will be fantastic parents #Hevon #HevonBaby #YR pic.twitter.com/4mAlSGTFpJ

      — KDRINFJ (@KDRINFJ) May 30, 2018

Since this is a soap opera, Hevon started out as an affair. Hilary was married to a blind Neil, Devon’s foster father. Those weren’t ideal circumstances but I was still about my shipping. It is what it is. Neil hasn’t been in my good graces for a minute. He was touched by a feisty angel named Dru but it really should’ve been him who went over the CGI waterfall while Lily needs chocolate and Advil. The Winters being against Hevon made for good drama at one point but even back then and now, the raw chemistry between Morgan and James was too potent. They’ve got the ability to have Hevon hit all those erogenous points with that eye sex.

Hilary and Devon just have a certain je ne sais quoi. There are many couples on daytime that need endless propping when the magic just isn’t there. Rafe and Hope on Days of our Lives comes to mind. As do Frank Valentini and any random parking lot where he can hire actors to join the bloated cast of General Hospital. The billionaire and his lady have made do with sparse airtime because a former head writer said it wasn’t in the budget to feature them more. More than once, it felt like the show resented their enduring popularity.

This is where the opinionated Aries jumps out. I do believe the energy of Hevon took Y&R by surprise and the writing has often gone out of its way to dilute the magic. Devon and Hilary, at times, have been stripped of their individuality and turned into clichés.  I like that Hilary is a vixen and messy while Devon is her righteous balance. But that balance has to be there.  They were both veering into becoming cartoons and not fully fleshed out characters with strengths, flaws and humanity. Maybe a black couple wasn’t meant to rival the chosen ones but they did.

I don’t love Hilary and Devon together because they’re Black. Jordan and Curtis are paired on GH and I have stronger opinions about what I’ll have for breakfast than that pairing. No shade but I just don’t feel it for them. Hevon grabs my attention , stirs something in me and the fact that they’re Black love being celebrated is just icing on the cake.

Angie and Jessie’s love conquered all,  including divorce and even death. Drucilla and Neil also captured hearts in Genoa City. So by no means is the concept of Black love new for daytime. It just feels damn good that Hilary and Devon are being given the baton to carve out their arc in the Rushmore of other supercouple greats.

Hevon on earth. Or at least in Genoa City until the next sweeps.

    • Roseanne Reboot Gets Booted After Racist Valerie Jarrett Tweet

As the philosopher Mo’Nique eloquently put it, when you do clownery, the clown comes back to bite. Roseanne just got her rebooted show cancelled because she just had to be a Bozo.

Disney's Bob Iger on #Roseanne cancellation: 'There was only one thing to do here, and that was the right thing' https://t.co/xt0KAdFOKf pic.twitter.com/RLB2liCZnA

      — Variety (@Variety) May 29, 2018

Roseanne just couldn’t keep her racism in check. Ever since her show returned to the airwaves earlier this year, she’s been gassed up. The very conservatives who demand celebrities stay out of politics readily embrace her thoughts. The same ones swear on their Bibles that Colin Kaepernick is disrespecting the flag and anthem find solace in a woman who made a mockery of our anthem.

These birds of a feather have rushed to defend Roseanne’s free speech and right to employment but cheer Colin being blackballed. There’s been so much energy for Roseanne because she’s allegedly been keeping it real in a culture gone politically correct.

      Nah.

Roseanne has degraded Michelle Obama, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton, posed happily in Nazi gear and trumpeted conspiracy theories long before she decided to tweet that Valerie Jarrett was an ape. Still, ABC decided to keep her show on the air. The network ceded the moral authority because her ratings were still high. Although, the viewership dipped with each episode but yet many outlets were discounting the outrage. There was always a spin about why the numbers were looking softer than the 18 million launch.  President Trump even called Roseanne to congratulate her on the viewership but James Shaw, who took down a gunman, almost turned into a pumpkin. Conscience and moral conviction were slow to respond to her antics because the money was good.

ABC should have never approved the Roseanne reboot to begin with. Nothing shes said has been any different that whats shes been saying. ABC let their bottom line outrank their integrity. I'm not going to give them props for being forced to have common damn sense pic.twitter.com/DGxAFOpEns

      — Ashley of Tribe Jabari (@WrecklessLove) May 29, 2018

Just take a moment to observe all the things Roseanne had to do to get canceled:

      – Call Valerie Jarrett an ape
      – accuse dems child sex trafficking
      – tell Hillary Clinton to commit suicide
      – accuse Chelsea Clinton of being part of a Jewish conspiracy
      – call George Soros a Nazi

      — Travon Free (@Travon) May 29, 2018

ABC was going to milk this cashcow because there are a lot of folks who do support Roseanne. Much like Donald Trump, she is perceived as “telling it like it is”. Well, not today Satan. The network finally decided that they had heard enough.

It’s easy to ask why Wanda Skyes, John Goodman, Sara Gilbert and a slew of others decided to sign on to the reboot to begin with. They’re established and not hurting for money to my latest TMZ intel. But there are also members of the cast and crew who have to eat. I can offer the benefit of doubt to those who genuinely believed in the premise of a show examining a family in the “heartland” from a different perspective other than the liberal one and what it means to love someone whose politics you differ from. On paper, it sounds good but Roseanne just couldn’t stop being Roseanne. She was never acting. Now her co-stars, writers, directors, stage hands, grips, boom operators, make up-artists, security are all out of jobs because in the Trump era, folks have been given tactic permission to be proud of their bigotry, xenophobia and racism.

By the end of the day, Roseanne will be a martyr to many in this country. Forget the black and brown bodies who are the victims of weaponized bigotry and racism. Never mind the asylum seekers who are being separated from their families, especially their children. The mass shootings that have become commonplace will continue to be dismissed as crisis actors who want attention. There is a segment of America whose hearts will bleed for Roseanne because she just can’t get to be a bigot in peace and insist accountability is a new form of oppression.

Again, nah. The clown just came back to bite.

    • NFL Benches Players, Kneels to Donald Trump

I’m not much of a football fan for much of the regular season or playoffs. I don’t know her. Mariah Carey is my guide as teams battle their way to the Super Bowl  which is when I pretend to know what’s going on but only really want to see the Halftime show. Going forward, I’m going to have to keep Mariah’s energy all the way through.

On Wednesday, the NFL announced that players would no longer be allowed to kneel during the national anthem. Players now have the option of staying in the back rather than to engage in forced patriotism but even that is being left to the discretion of team owners. They will decide how “respect” is shown to the anthem and flag.; if a personnel acts on their own accord, they will be subjected to a penalty.

Roger Goodell, commissioner of the NFL, thinks that he can split the baby in half. In his mind, players can still protest police brutality and other cultural flash point issues just as long as they’re not seen. They can raise fists, kneel and scream at the moon just as long as no one seems them doing it but that’s not how it goes. Not anymore. The backlash was swift and immediate.

Management has chosen to quash the same freedom of speech that protects someone who wants to salute the flag in an effort to prevent someone who does not wish to do so.

      — DeMaurice Smith (@DeSmithNFLPA) May 23, 2018

If the NFL thing was about the flag & anthem, you’d be outraged when Trump doesn’t hold a hand over his heart & botches the words. If it was about troops, you’d be as pissed about Niger as about Benghazi. It’s not principle. It’s about control of brown bodies. Stop the bullshit.

      — Jeffrey Wright (@jfreewright) May 23, 2018

Roger Goodell and the Shield behind him want to make it easier for fans to just enjoy the game. Basketball seems to speak truth to power and ball at the same time but the NFL can’t chew and walk it seems. They’re prompted more by appeasing Donald Trump (who doesn’t even know the words)

and the slippery slope of escapism. I’m all for that ; to just close your eyes for a few hours and forget about the troubles of the world but putting on a jersey doesn’t strip any of these athletes of their God-given and constitutional rights. They are still Black men living in a country where their status isn’t a guaranteed shield against racism. Just ask Sterling Brown and LeBron James.

The anthem is just words. The flag is a cloth. It is only when we practice the ideals of both than do they have greater meaning and carry out the convictions of their stated purpose. James Baldwin puts it better than I ever could:

I am not at war with America. I love my country and want to do my part to help make it a better union. For it to become so, the mass shootings, violent encounters with police and various injustices must be addressed. It bothers my conscience that this trauma porn is what too many of us wake up to everyday. So, I get the need to bury heads in the sand for a few hours but not under the rules of forced allegiance; a form of salute that wasn’t even mandatory until 2009 and it’s oh so telling that the NFL has responded quicker to squash peaceful protest than to be more effective with the issues of brain damage and players beating their wives. Jerry Jones couldn’t wait to forgive and forget Greg Hardy and Ezekiel Elliott. Football may not be my favorite pastime but I know the tea. We all do.

They created a penalty for protesting racism faster than for players who hit women. https://t.co/R8mez2cKAx

      — Tuxedo Mask (@TheLoveBel0w) May 23, 2018

NFL players are not just mules for the entertainment of the masses. Just like the peaceful Montgomery boycotts, their acts of civil disobedience are meant to disrupt and make others uncomfortable. They don’t forfeit their dignity, character and resolve because some fans don’t want to hear about how hard it is for others; that they’d rather see balls thrown in the end zone than to help change the conditions in this country.  The fact that many of those demanding players stand for the anthem probably will be the first ones acting a fool if they can’t get a beer if the NFL halts concession sales during the anthem. Maybe they’ll just stay home and sit on their couches like they probably do now.

The land of the free and home of the brave shouldn’t just be tailored to those who only believe the 2nd amendment matters. The first does to and you still have it at your job. So do these players. They can’t Colin Kaepernick everyone; punish every last player who dares to care for more than just the game.

So, after a touchdown, take a knee. Kneel after a sack. Kneel on the sidelines. Kneel at the endzone. Kneel at every opportunity.

    • #RoyalWedding Meghan Markle’s Folks Don’t Make Them Family

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are getting married this weekend in case you hadn’t heard. If there’s actually a show of hands out there, Meghan’s family members have been more than willing to run and tell dat.

My invitation to the royal wedding might’ve gotten lost in the mail but Meghan’s kinfolk were intentionally left out of the upcoming festivities at Windsor Castle. Thomas Sr., Samantha and Thomas Jr. will not be in the chapel taking selfies with Queen Elizabeth. Her father staged paparazzi shots, had a heart attack and has spent the past few days using TMZ as his press secretary.  Thomas Jr. blasted Meghan in open letter, demanding Prince Harry not marry his sister and Samantha has told anyone who will listen how Meghan is the reason why the sun doesn’t shine. It’s been one plot twist after another with these folks.

All the while, Doria Ragland has been minding her own business and eating her food. The mother of the bride has shown the most respect, deference and class for her daughter’s happiness than those other troublemakers combined but initially bore the brunt of shaming the monarchy. The British press reduced Dora to a caricature because she wears her hair in a natural style and lived in Compton. An accomplished woman like Meghan is an actress and philanthropist but portrayed as a social climber deemed not good enough for Prince Harry. As though Princess Diana didn’t spill all the tea about the royals, Harry’s problematic past which includes his Nazi displays and that Prince Charles wasn’t a divorced man himself when he wed for the second time. The firm is lucky to have these two Queens joining them for tea and scones at the dinner table.

The level of scathing racism Meghan and Dora have endured to get to this point has been on display; that both have shown more grace than required is a testament to their characters and possibly just a sign they’re used to that side of the family acting like damn fools. I’ve been there. You can give so much of yourself to another because you share blood but the venom they feel for you courses through their veins; just waiting for the moment to spit it right back in your face. There comes a point when you just can’t turn the other cheek.

It’s not easy cutting off family members but it has to be done for your own well being. I was recently told by a relative that I was only a “title” after I extended myself. Lesson learned. I have no regrets removing this person from my life because there’s more to being family than DNA.  It’s a biological fact but doesn’t lend itself to that person being any closer to you than a stranger on the street. Be very wary of foes hiding in plain sight as family.

None of us get to pick our family members. It’s the draw of the universe but we can choose we share our cherished moments and life with. I don’t blame Meghan one bit for keeping hers away on what should be a special day.  They’ve already tried to sabotage it. While all the drama is giving the rest of us in the peanut gallery something to talk about, no more words need to be said to those who are actively trying to steal your joy. You’ve got your mom and sometimes, that’s all you need.

Meghan, enjoy your day and Prince. Your story deserves its happily ever after and I’ll be up at 5 a.m. , crust in my eyes and a yawn slipping through my mouth, wishing you well.

My mother’s heart and essence is made of vibranium, the strongest substance known to Wakanda and mankind. Her strength is literally the reason why I’m here. She didn’t just give birth to me and my siblings but has nurtured us into reflections of her spirit.

Anyone can have a baby. A dog in heat certainly can. To actually be a mother is an instinct and love in action. I’m fortunate to have been raised by a woman of strength and drew the universe’s draw by having aunts who also helped guide me along the way; a path fortified and begins in Haiti.

Les Cayes, Haiti is my mom’s birthplace.

      Sak pase?

      N’ap boule

Haiti is is a Caribbean country, the first of her name to revolt from slavery when they defeated France in 1804. The history is rich and not mired in filth as some would boldly declare in their ignorance. That is the soil that gave life to freedom and shaped my mother’s formative years. She went to school and became a licensed nurse. In 1982, with her heart still full of love for her flawed country,  she came to America in search of the American dream and would eventually become a citizen of the United States.

The early years in the United States were hard on my mom. As an immigrant, she had to master a new language, culture and job prospects. It wasn’t a task made easy given that she was a woman of color–Black–an immigrant and not of a certain social class.

Nonetheless, she persisted rather than let these circumstances intimidate her. She struggled with paying the rent and providing for three kids as a single mother but every  night, we had food on our table. We had beds to sleep in. There was a roof over our heads. There were no gestures of coming by with pizza or the random call to acknowledge our existence. My mother was there every single day loving us. Drying our tears. Putting up with our bullshit.

On top of all that and putting us through college, she was also sending money back home to her family. She never forgot about Haiti, how far she came and how her guidance was nurturing our sprint to carry the baton of our lineage forward.

In doing so, she has put so many others above her own happiness; sacrificing in ways that I will never know or appreciate until I become a mother. But let me tell you how good God is. It wasn’t just the melanin passed on through the bloodline that will have me looking 25 when I’m 60 but the vibranium interred in her bones. I’m gonna be alright.

To those who no longer physically have their mother’s, my heart is with you. My grandmother died in 2013 and to this day, I see how that loss is still felt by my mom and aunts. I hope and pray the comfort of cherished memories embrace you.

Happy Birthday Mom! Sing-a-long if you know the words and send her all the positive vibes you can muster. She’s 62 years old today and I know her greatest wish is to be a grandmother already. Since that isn’t happening anytime soon, I hope my love and eternal gratitude for her continues to tide her over.

Speaking of my mom, she’s also the Holy Mother of no filter. She’s nice and firm but will let you know about yourself. Being the good daughter that I am, I’ve got to make my DNA proud and let daytime have more of my smoke. Today, in addition to blowing out candles, I’ve got to burn down the reluctance soap operas have to gay relationships.

Young and the Restless flirted with a romance between Mariah and Tessa. Those two kissed and I loved it! Mariah finally seemed destined to become a leading actress carrying her own story, Tessa finally found a pulse and Noah’s trajectory as a misused legacy scion was on the verge of being corrected; two siblings fighting over the same woman would’ve been must see. Blink and you missed it, the story was cut short because of viewer complaints. Middle America can stomach rapes, babies being killed, murder, adultery, endless lust and cheer on abuse but two women being intimate was the hard red line.

You should’ve seen the pearl clutching in my #YR group on Facebook over the Tessa/Mariah storyline pic.twitter.com/x9zhJnvuUE

How do you know what God wants? The Bible was written by man, there is no doubt they inserted their beliefs in the Bible. Just worship God & mind your business. Love is love ma’am. https://t.co/JGAtFIoBvM

      — Cher M. (@jamdownrocks) May 8, 2018

As an aside, Camryn Grimes earned that Emmy for those beautiful and well written scenes of Mariah confessing to Sharon that she kissed Tessa. Oh, what might’ve been if this arc had been allowed to simply continue.

Bold and Beautiful continues to collect GLAAD Awards for its breakthrough transgender story involving Maya even though the character lives in the Forrester basement. I remember gasping when Maya told her truth and in a bold move, Rick supported his love for who she is. A privileged white man said this was his woman and everyone else would have to deal. The show also expertly weaved in Julius’ objections, rooted in his role as the patriarchal Black father, to Maya but since then, story has been sparse. A trans woman living her best life in LA and dealing with the fallout should’ve driven stories for years. Instead, Maya is domesticated and only seen in the background as Hope and Steffy argue over who gets to ride Liam’s disco stick.

General Hospital allegedly features a relationship between Brad and Lucas, a legacy character. I wouldn’t be able to tell. I think they had a wedding. That’s much more than Kristina and Parker got.

Days of Our Lives stands as the sole exception to daytime’s blackout on gay romances. Will, Sonny and Paul are in the middle of a torrid triangle and I’m here for it! The sexuality of the characters so easily cedes to the substance of the story of a classic triangle. Another subset of the plot has been Vivian using Leo to distract Sonny.

Can we trust Leo? #DAYS pic.twitter.com/pqfomjIJBk

      — Days of our Lives (@nbcdays) May 6, 2018

Unfortunately,  some of the comments were not as receptive to the story.  Greg Rikaart responded to the disgruntled fan.

Gay ppl are part of the fabric of our society, Donna, which is why we are represented on tv. Nothing is being pushed on you anymore than you expressing yourself is pushing anything on me. I do hope that your exposure to people that are different from you can help you grow. ✌🏼

      — Greg Rikaart (@gregrikaart) May 7, 2018

I’m sensitive to those who don’t support gay relationships due to religious reasons. My family is very conservative and Bible reared. I don’t believe all those who are against it are bigots and want to pelt others with stones. For others, all they want to do is judge and use the Bible as a weapon. My Bachelor’s degree is in journalism and not theology but I recall something about no sin being greater than the other. The same should apply to daytime and please stop insisting that gay relationships are being shoved down your throats. Characters are sleeping around each other all the time. Victor and Nikki have an open marriage on Y&R. If you can handle seniors being swingers, a loving same sex couple shouldn’t enrage you to the point you throw the remote at the TV.

If it is, that’s entirely a person’s choice but I sincerely wish daytime would stop prioritizing those threatening to stop watching. My informal survey tells me that there are many more who would tune if more diverse characters and stories were featured. The totality of the audience isn’t older and conservative. Personally, I’d love to see a LGBQT narrative tackled from the Black perspective. B&B waded into those waters with the Avants but I’m greedy and want more. I want so much more from daytime. I’m demanding it.

Outside of a girl crush on Rihanna, I’m not a member of the LGBTQ community. I’m an ally and I know that I don’t have the standing to speak with more authority or nuance on this subject. What I do know is that representation matters. I like to see those who look like me showcased and not have it be a token throwaway. Days should not be the only show on daytime committed to same-sex stories.

I just want to be entertained and love stories are my sweet spot. Wesley and Lionel’s relationship on Dear White People captivated me the most. That in like stage and all its awkwardness got to me. My heart has beat faster around guys that I’m into and words just escape me. This was actually my own real life experience last month. I got buzzed and told him I was sorry that I couldn’t act on my feelings without the liquor. And then he said I didn’t need it. AHHHH! But anyways, that’s the kind of rush I get watching two people who are into each come together. With the amount of nonsense that is on the airwaves, love in the afternoon surely can’t be the worst offense.

    • #DearWhitePeople Showcases Humanity of Black Women

I’m currently on my third tour of duty binging Dear White People, both seasons, on Netflix. Each encore reveals something I missed in the nuanced portrayal of Black students dealing with the trauma of racism while in college. Kurt’s new style as Thor didn’t immediately jump out. It’s a good look but spreading the humanity around for all the characters is an even better one.

In particular, the black female leads were allowed to be cocoa butter, black girl magic, genuine free thinkers and messy in their own ways without being reduced to caricatures. Sam, Joelle, Coco, Brooke, Kelsey and even Rikki exist in the same space without blunting the perspective of the other; almost as if more than one of us can breathe the same air without oxygen being rationed because it’s just gonna run out. All of these ladies exhale.

Sam is passionate, in your face and compensating for her mixed heritage. Joelle is the “Kelly”, loyal to a fault and discerning. Coco is an opportunist, social climbing schemer whose heart beats for what’s right even though her means are different. Brooke is sharp witted, intelligence continually on display and a freak. Kelsey comes across as bougie but beyond that surface description, she’s just as engaged in intersectionality as a queer woman of color. Rikki is exploiting the sunken place but ultimately, it isn’t just for her own gain. There’s a method to her madness even if the audience doesn’t agree. In their own ways, all of these women take the bait as they’re emotionally taxed but never grinded into the angry woman stereotype. Even’s Sam worse moments are rooted in hurt but yet all are still there to give hugs to the wounded Black men in their worlds.

Sam, Joelle, Coco, Kelsey, Brooke and Rikki resist in their own way. She’s vulnerable and prone to being difficult. She walks in confidence and when those stumbles come, another shows the reciprocity of comfort. Even Rikki thought she was helping Sam with her advice while Jo and CoCo were there for her in grief. They’re shown as Black women navigating the world in skin that’s met with criticism and finding a way to not just survive but live to the fullest.

These ladies get the benefit of being fully fleshed out characters. It’s a dynamic that is missing from other sectors of entertainment, the most glaring example being daytime. Hilary and Lily’s rivalry on The Young and the Restless comes across as some white writer who watched Real Housewives of Atlanta for the first time. I’m surprised the actors aren’t directed to throw chairs and roll their necks a few times during a scene. The dialogue is forced and just plain doesn’t make sense at times. In the name of Mo’Nique, please make it make sense. Hilary and Lily are both accomplished woman of color but their screen time is reserved for fighting over Devon. The fact that Lily is pathologically obsessed with her brother’s sex life and Hilary being the town punching bag is just doubling down on the cartoonish aspect of it all. Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner were better matched.

Before I’m accused of respectability politics, I enjoy a good read between Black women. Olivia Pope and Annalise Keating letting the other have a few months ago was everything. We don’t all get along and our tongues cut deeper than  any swords. Not all skin folk are kin folk. At the same time, we don’t spend all our time fighting each other. We are our greatest allies. Too much of the time, we all that we got.

It’s cliché at this point but we should be mindful of what we’re allowing to take root in our gardens. Dear White People is proof of the kind of good fruit that can bloom when done right. Not every Black woman is carrying sour grapes and ready to spit, especially at each other.  Underneath the pixie dust of Black girl magic, we’re still human and all that it means. It’s nice to see that shown.
